1st visit of a patient: To initiate TLC, the
patient is asked to lower intakes of saturated fats and dietary
cholesterol in order to lower serum LDL cholesterol level. Also
physical activity is encouraged.
2nd visit of a patient: After 6 weeks, the LDL
response is determined; if the LDL cholesterol goal has not been
achieved, other therapeutic options for LDL lowering such as plant
stanols and viscous fiber are asked to be added to the diet.
3rd visit of a patient: After maximum reduction
of LDL cholesterol with dietary therapy, the emphasis is shifted to
management of the metabolic syndrome and associated lipid risk
factors.
It is important to note that healthy
nutrition and physical activity always should be part of the
actions when aiming to reduce the risk of CHD.
