According to the international guidelines, diet and other lifestyle changes are always the basis of the therapy for dyslipidemia. The diet also plays an important role when cholesterol medication has already been initiated since the diet has other beneficial effects beyond its effects on lipid concentrations.

It has been shown that dietary plant stanols safely reduce serum cholesterol in a broad range of patient groups. Benecol products can be safely used by basically any population group, including healthy family members of the patients and even children over 5 years.
NCEP (US National Cholesterol Education Program) recommends an approach called "Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes" (TLC) in reducing the risk of CHD. TLC steps »

In some cases, dietary changes are not enough and cholesterol lowering medication is required. Statins are the most widely used cholesterol-lowering drugs currently available. However, because statins and plant stanols have different mechanism of action, the cholesterol lowering effects of statins and Plant stanol ester in Benecol products are additive to each other and thus using Benecol products can be highly recommended also for patients using statins already.

Statins inhibit the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver, which leads to higher uptake of LDL-cholesterol by an increased number of LDL receptors. By comparison, plant stanols reduce the absorption of cholesterol in the digestive tract. Thus combining products enriched with plant stanols with statin therapy will deliver both of these effects.

Adding Benecol products to the diet of patients already on statin medication provides additional 10-12% effect in LDL reduction [1], [2], [3]. It means that a greater reduction of cholesterol lowering can be achieved by combining Plant stanol ester enriched Benecol products with statin treatment rather than doubling the dose of statin, which generally produces only additional effect of 6% [1], [4].

The additive cholesterol lowering effect of Plant stanol ester has been shown to persist over time in patients on continuous statin treatment.

Cholesterol-lowering in different patient groups

For many patient groups controlling cholesterol level is especially important. Benecol has been proven beneficial and well-tolerated for example with following patients:

Diabetes

HCP_II_accord _diabetesThe incidence of diabetes type 2 is increasing rapidly worldwide as the population ages and unhealthy lifestyles are adopted. Diabetics have a multiple and increased risk of developing CVD compared with healthy individuals. This is why it is very important to treat their risk factors as effectively and as soon as possible. Plant stanol ester effectively reduces serum cholesterol in both type 1 and type 2 diabetics [5], [6], [7], [8]. Plant stanol ester has been recognized by both the American Diabetes Association and the American College of Cardiology Foundation guidelines as an effective tool to modulate dyslipidemia in diabetics.

Patients with CAD

HCP_II_accord _CADWhen the patient already has cardiovascular disease, it is important to try to prevent the recurrence of a cardiac event by reducing all modifiable risk factors. Benecol products containing Plant stanol ester are an effective mean in lowering serum total and LDL cholesterol also in this group of patients. [9], [10]

For example, the addition of plant stanol margarine to the diets of heart transplant patients reduced cholesterol levels 22% more than statin did on its own. Subsequently, 70% of the patients were able to reduce their statin intake by adding stanol ester margarine to their diets [11].

Familial hypercholesterolemia

HCP_II_accord _familialFamilial hypercholesterolemia (FH), a genetic disease in which serum cholesterol level is elevated due to an inherited dysfunction in the LDL receptors. In consequence, LDL cholesterol excretion is decreased or blocked and thus its level in serum is increased. In those cases hypercholesterolemia can be detected already in childhood.

The efficacy and safety of using Benecol products enriched with Plant stanol ester has been shown both in adults as well as in children with FH [12], [13].
